Tennessee Pizzeria Faces Controversy After Refusing to Cater Same-Sex Wedding

A pizzeria named Pizzeria Cortile in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has found itself in the middle of a public outcry after refusing to provide catering services for a same-sex wedding. A left - leaning media company first brought the pizzeria's policy to the public's attention, sparking widespread criticism, and the pizzeria defended its decision as a matter of "personal conviction."

The day after the story broke, Pizzeria Cortile posted a statement on its Facebook account, confirming the policy. The statement read, "Recently, we made the difficult decision not to cater a wedding due to our personal beliefs. This belief is based on our personal conviction. We understand that not everyone shares this view, but we hold it without judging others. This decision was not meant to harm or hurt anyone, and we're sorry for the pain it has caused members of our community." The pizzeria also expressed hope that over time, people could understand each other and listen to one another, respecting each other even when they disagreed.

However, the statement did not quell the controversy. Although the pizzeria restricted comments on the specific post, its Facebook page was flooded with hundreds of negative comments on other unrelated posts. For example, one comment with over 200 likes said, "There aren't two reasonable sides here. Nobody asked you to be gay or promote any message. They just wanted pizza, but bigots refused. It's plain discrimination." Another comment sarcastically asked, "Are you going to start asking your customers about their sexual orientation when they enter? I'm bisexual. Am I welcome? You might as well put on your website that you don't cater to or serve gays." Some even suggested reporting the pizzeria to the IRS for an audit.

On the other hand, some netizens defended the pizzeria, citing Supreme Court precedents. One commenter wrote, "The Supreme Court has ruled on this, and it's not discrimination. You have the freedom to make choices, and so do they. Who are you to force others to share your beliefs while expecting them not to do the same to you?"

The wave of negative attention was mainly driven by posts on Reddit and readers of the progressive news website The Chattanooga Holler. The Chattanooga Holler first exposed the pizzeria's policy on social media, along with a screenshot of the pizzeria's response, with the caption, "INBOX: Evidently, Pizzeria Cortile will not cater to same-sex weddings. Just letting folks not waste their time (or money)." Under this post, netizens criticized, such as "All I'm hearing is 'We're allowed to be homophobic because of God,'" and "Calling bigotry a 'personal conviction' is quite a stretch." A post on Chattanooga Reddit titled "Big L for Pizzeria Cortile" also received over 900 comments, with the majority criticizing the pizzeria. As of now, Pizzeria Cortile has not responded to requests for comment.
